I think it is just a leaf from a tree, or a piece of garbage (plastic). Not very far away.
That's probably why you didn't notice it at the moment you took the photo.
It looks like a 100% crop from the original image, so that could be why there's no lens blur, together with tight lens aperture.

Very nice to see sprites in color! How close is this to true colors? In my enthusiasm I did some hotpixel removal using the "dust & scratches" removal filter in Photoshop. Where the sprites are I left the original image. Of course real stars are gone now too, but it gives a nice impres...

@RainerKracht: If you ask me, those are normal Cirrus clouds. Maybe from airplanes.

I think it is indeed the very low sun that was shining on the cloud or rain which diffuses the red light. It looks pink, because the sunlight is relatively weak, and in combination with the light from the blue sky above the cloud it becomes pink, like in this example: http://www.mdbsite.com/skies/re...

A very importand aspect of the visible blue is also the height of the sun: When a sundog is low the blue is filtered anyway. And... probably, even the thickness of the cirrus is importand for the 'ilussion' of a more blue sundog. With thin cirrus the background is blue, and the 'tail' of the sundog ...
