Nice halo display today. Here two images shot with my Olympus digital camera. Unfortunally there were a lot of lower clouds which hide much of it.

Mats,

Your supralateral arc is very well-developed and there may be infralateral arc but its hard to tell. did you see upper tangent arc?

I got a complete rainbow a few days ago with my Nikon D-100.

Fine display

Beitrag von Eva Seidenfaden » 6. Apr 2004, 06:22

Hello Mats,

no need to care about the distinction of a 46° halo and a supralateral arc in your images! A fine tangent arc and a fine supralateral arc. Lucky you!

Thanks Eva and Michael.

To Michael.
Yes there was an upper tangent arc. It was covered with clouds almost all the time. I got a glimse of it and shot a photo. See below.

Eva. Yes this was very nice and I'm glad that I got a chance to catch it on film and in digital format. I had forgotten my camera at home for the first time for ages. I had to hurry home when I discovered it. And naturally lower clouds came in and covered most of it. Anyway this is the most coulorful supralateral arc I have ever seen.

Intense supralateral arc

Beitrag von Michael Ellestad » 7. Apr 2004, 03:45

Mats,

Some many years ago when I knew little about halos I observed a display in the morning that had an intense supralateral arc. If it was not for them annoying low level clouds there may have been a possibility to observe wegener's arc which like the supralateral need perfect end faces for its formation and by the looks of the supralateral arc pics you got the end faces of those column crystals were perfect.

I have photographed a few displays this year and one of them had nice lowitz arcs and two of which had halos from pyramidal ice.

Good luck for more from the sky.

All of the best,
Michael
