substorm over southern Norway

Beitrag von jan lameer » 21. Okt 2003, 22:10

From what I see from the Norwegian Magnetometers, a small substorm is in progress over southern Norway (Bergen).
This should easily be visible from northern Germany and northern Netherlands whith clear skies.

Very hight activty for 20 minutes.
Photo made with an Olympus 5050Z digital Camera.

Exposure time 4 seconds 400 asa and an opening of 1.8.
Unfornunally there was no time to get to a darker place so I had to shoot the pictures over the suburb where I live.

Hi Mats !
Great pic from the inside the city !

Me and Jan H plus friends will travel to Kiruna in January.
Do you know if it is safe (snow wise) in that time of the year to travel by car to Stockholm, so we can take the train up north from there ?

Hi Jan.

I can't say if it is safe to take the car to Stockholm in January.
It can be hard weather that time. Last january we had a lot of snow coming down. Half a meter of snow.

Hi Marjorie

Did you take pictures? You might still be able to get some red aurora low over the horizon...

Hi,

Short note about the night before going to bed....

This time i had clear skies from 16-00 UTC and despite of the fact that mags (Kiruna and SGO) had been dancing pretty heavily about all the time, there was just 2 active moments as far as i saw.

Second was the one Mats saw too and it was pretty nice. Active, bright dancing lights and even the duration was pretty long. Nice purples and else on the rays...

The first one was...well, i am not exactly sure about the timing, maybe around 18.30 UTC. Now, this one was AWESOME! The duration was again just those normal couple minutes, but these were extraordinary ones. I think 1/2 oct. 2002 being my first ever high lat. lights at high middle lat. The first peak tonight was my second ever high lat. lights at high middle lat. The lights were very bright and very fast moving, but that not so unusual. What was unusual was the AWESOME...simply unbelievable screaming yellow belt with screaming red belly, steaming from north to northwest in the height of display. I have seen this before, but never so that the belt was actually maybe even as high as 10 degrees above the horizon.
Little before the end of the display, there was also a quite bright and very sharp corona for a couple ten seconds...In my mind this was the brightest corona here this year.
Ok, i don't think i got any decent photos of these, but this time i am more than satisfied that i at least saw what i saw. That one particular yellow/red belt was one of the most impressive sights that i have ever seen during an auroral display. It felt quite like the same as when one sees an MAJOR fireball...the image won't leave your mind very easily. ;-) Maybe it was a good thing that most of the northern middle Finland was clouded out or else...too many peoples would still be searching for their dropped and missing lower jaws.

Tom E.

Hi Tom,
thank you very much for this long report. Oh dear, times for us here are very hard to read this wonderful stories from you and Mats and the others at more northern places.
I hope there is still some more power in the sun the next days, perhaps we will be able to create similar reports :-)

Best Regards and Clear Skies!

Hi Jan,

No, i didn't take pictures.
I have seen the lights only twice in my life and i prefer to see them with my eyes, rather than through a camera lens. I would have missed the short display of the 14th of this october if i had taken my camera with me :)

Next time i will try, maybe.......

Marjorie

Hi Tom,

I am glad you got a great show, too! I must have missed that part of the display (I think I was practicing the cello at that time). It would have been interesting to compare. What I find interesting is that the "bellies" you saw - and those you showed us on your brilliant pictures a while ago - were red, while I usually see pink "bellies" here. The fantastic show I got last night (at ca. 16:55 UT) was *very* pink. I fear that it won't show very well on the pictures, because it was moving so extremely fast (every time I have seen this kind of intense and broad pink aurora, it was moving incredibly fast).

BTW, I did see more aurora last night (there was aurora every time I looked), but it was mostly quite diffuse and not very bright (just like the night before). But when you and Mats saw your second show of the night, I was already in bed.

LOL! I hope you didn't loose yours (or accidentally picked up someone else's)? :-) (Maybe you should leave it at home next time you go out to watch the aurora as a precaution, so that you can't drop it.)
