POTENTIAL MAJOR SOLAR FLARE WARNING

UPDATED: 22:45 UTC, 28 JULY 2002

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

CORRECTION TO LAST WARNING:

Region 10044 is not a reversed polarity spot complex, as was stated in
our last major flare warning. It has never been a reversed polarity spot
complex. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

CURRENT SYNOPSIS:

Active spot complex 10039 is continuing to pose a significant threat for
potential major solar flare activity. Magnetogram and visual analyses today
confirm an increase in magnetic shear and gradients along the neutral line of
the primary delta within the large leader spots. The degree of shear along
this neutral line is very significant. A fairly substantial increase in
subflare activity has occurred in and around this delta over the last 24
hours. A major solar flare is expected at any time over the next 24 to 48
hours. A high velocity CME may accompany this event, if and when it occurs.

Also of concern is the developing delta configuration in the central
spot complex of Region 10044. This east-west sheared neutral line has shown
an increase in magnetic field strength over the last 24 hours and may also be
involved in a major eventic solar flare event.

The proximity of Regions 10039 and 10044 suggest they may both be
involved in a major solar flare event.

A proton flare from either of these spot complexes (but particularly
from Region 10039) is a distinct possibility.
