POSSIBLE NAKED EYE SUNSPOT COMPLEX

A very large and complex sunspot group has rotated into view around the
southeastern solar limb. The large leader spots associated with this spot
complex should become visible with the protected naked-eye over the next
several days (if they aren't already visible). Whether it remains visible
will depend on whether the spot complex maintains its large size. Over the
past 24 hours, it has experienced minor growth.

This spot complex has the potential of producing energetic solar
activity that may have an ability to enhance auroral activity over the next
week. The spot complex is still too near to the limb to perform detailed
magnetic analyses on it. However, the latest data strongly suggests this spot
complex may contain multiple magnetic delta configurations where opposite
polarity spot umbrae are located within a single penumbra. Delta
configurations are statistically more prone to be involved with energetic
solar activity.

Additional information, including images of the large spot complex
identified as Region 10069, are available at:

NOAA 0069

Beitrag von Peter Kuklok » 14. Aug 2002, 16:34

"NOAA 0069 produced an M1.8 and several C-class flares
over the past 24-hours. The region contains two strong
deltas, the eastermost of which has decayed slightly
since yesterday. There are also strong gradients visible
along the magnetic inversion line of the trailing portions
of the group. Further C- and M-class events expected
with a chance for an X."
