CME

Beitrag von jan lameer » 23. Jul 2002, 15:46

Hi
I thought it was impossible for a limb CME to reach earth, but according to Spaceweather.com some material is coming our way. That is quite interesting.
More fire in the sky than ever before seems a bit over enthousiastic to me since earth is not positioned as favourable as in March or September with respect to the sun. But perhaps the location of the sunspot complex far from the solar equator is good now. Does anyone know if earth is above or below the solar equator now?

Hi Jan,

I guess we are a little above of the ecliptic.

In the following picture you can count the 10 degree-steps till north-pole, but to south only until 80.
I think, this means we are a little above.

This pic is earth-centered, so that the angle of view changes over the year.

Hope I'm right.

Hi Lutz
Thanks, I should have thought of that map myself. 10039 will cross pretty much near the center of the visible disk.
So we're in a situation that statistical our position is not so good but in this particular case we're located favourable to receive material if 10039 produces a CME in a few days.
