Solar Activity Update
INTENSE activity has been occurring on the southeast solar limb over the last 12 to 24 hours. A long-duration M-class flare was observed off the southeast limb. X-rays remained above M-class levels for 8 hours (a very unusual length of time). Short wave fadeout activity on HF radio frequencies were notable across the sun-lit hemisphere during this event, with increased absorption affecting signal strength. Major flare activity will be possible from the region off the southeast solar limb. This region is beginning to become visible on the southeast limb now.
Region 484 (now near the central solar meridian) has the potential to produce a major X-class solar flare. There is also a slight chance for a proton flare from this region. Earth-directed coronal mass ejections are very probable should an energetic flare occur from this region.
Note: The full halo CME that was thought to be associated with a long-duration event from Region 484 early in the UTC day of 21 October has been determined to be backsided.
