Question about 5/6 nov. 2001 aurora

Beitrag von tomeklund » 30. Dez 2010, 20:21

Hi all,

It has been quite some time when i last wrote to this forum...Ok, then to the subject. Spaceweather.com says that the CME of this event arrived around 01.50 UT on 6th of november. Here in southern Finland unusually red auroras started well 4-6 hour before the impact time. I remember Ulrich Rieth telling about some theories what might have caused that early onset of unusual auroras (Unusual in the light of my personal aurora viewing experience about all the other auroras i have seen over the years.), but of course i have forgotten what was theory all about. So, i would be very glad to hear it all again... :D Why on 5th of november 2001 unusually red auroras started way before the moment, when the actual impact happened...In case the actual impact is right.

Best regards,
Tom E

I do not have an answer for you (since I am lacking the knowledge needed) but I am also interesting in getting to know why the red auroras you mentioned occured before the impact time!
