Polarlichter beobachten in Südfinnland

Hallo Kathrin,

ich lebe seit 4.5 Jahren in Stockholm (vorher München) und habe hier eine ganz gute Ausbeute an Polarlichtereignissen, ca. 20 pro Jahr. Allerdings schaffte ich es bisher nicht, zwischen üblicherweise 15.5. und 15.8. Polarlichter zu beobachten, weil es doch noch sehr hell ist.

Hier in Mittelskandinavien gibts alles andere als jede Nacht Polarlicht. Es braucht üblicherweise moderate Aktivität, damit man Polarlicht sieht; ab ca. Kp=4+ gibts Chancen auf horizontnahe statische Bögen Richtung Norden, ab ca. Kp=5..5+ gibs hier auch mal eine nette Show.

Ich betreibe hier in Stockholm ein Magnetometer, das einem anzeigen kann, ob derzeit magnetische Aktivität herrscht - http://magobs.net/viby/
Ein ähnliches Magnetometer wird meines Wissens nach auch etwas ausserhalb von Turku betrieben. Und natürlich hilft der Magnetometerstack der Uni Tromsø bei der Einschätzung der Lage.

Hello,

Just wanted to share my experiences of northern lights on southern Finland. Image is taken at 2006 -> August 20th. It is shot for a panorama format. Taken in the location near my home, at Espoo. So it is 11km away from Helsinki center (direct line on the map).

I estimate that there could be possibility to see auroras on mid August. It of course requires good sun activity and a certain level of KP index. I hope you could see auroras on your visit

This link is also a good point to follow, provided by FMI (meteorolocical institute). You could look the two cities, Nurmijärvi and Tartu. First one is nearest to Helsinki. If the activity level is going up at Tartu (Estonia), it is usually at least same (or higher) activity at southern Finland.

Activity (Rx max) is seen on the right side column. If it is red ("korkea", ie high) there should be good opportunity to see auroras. In this kind of alarm system, it would be already best to be on the photo location with your camera before peak activity

vielen Dank für deine Antwort; speziell der Hinweis auf den Zeitraum hilft uns schon mal weiter. Wir werden insgesamt bis ca. Mitte August in Südfinnland sein. Evtl. bestehen ja dann gegen Ende hin noch Chancen.

Currently the auroral level monitor (aurora fmi link I sent earlier) shows high activity level for south Finland. I checked the sky just now, unfortunately it is cloudy here at Espoo
