Rare & new halo types at Taivaanvahti (Sweden, 14.12.2018)

Beitrag von Timo Kuhmonen » 14. Dez 2018, 18:49

Found this observation from Taivaanvahti. Images by Magnus Edbäck (Borlänge, Sweden). Formed in the multiple scattering. For description, look the first comment by Marko Pekkola...

Also on Les Cowleys site...

Hallo allerseits,

I also noticed the "Heja Sverige" comment :) It is also worth to mention, that in the unsharp masked image, there is a second arc visible on top of CZA.

Hi Timo,

thanks again for posting this. I am a long time follower of both Finnish and Swedish observers (e.g. Peter Rosén, Göran Strand and others), so I think this exceptionally fine halo display was happening in the right spot for everyone and on time for Christmas.

Must see, what comes out of an extended analysis.

Have a nice Holiday Season, all!

Elmar

PS: by the way, is this the same display (found in a Borlänge streetview panorama by Federico Massano)?

https://goo.gl/maps/zxaX5PZkBAy

If so, look at the zenith (Kern arc?) and some of the sky behind (the anthelic region unfortunately blocked by the Dalarna University building).

I am not sure about that image, from google (it looks like a stitched panorama, so precise analysis based on panorama may not be accurate). At least these seem to be additional images at SVT web site:

also on YouTube:

http://www.thehalovault.org/2018/12/com ... 5768303729

has links to two videos showing a left 44-deg parhelion and the zenithal sky with Ounasvaara and Kern arcs

https://twitter.com/amkatiwka/status/10 ... 7526294528
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipF4wf6RsWs

My formerly found hemispherical panorama at Google Maps is from the same spot (Dalarna University) as the Youtube-Video showing the Kern arc even better

https://goo.gl/maps/zxaX5PZkBAy

There, it can also be seen, that half a dozen people seem to have taken notice of the phenomenon with some taking stills and videos. In moments like this, maybe a full panorama as from Ricoh Theta cameras would be in place, although these are still not available in RAW.

In any case, Borlänge is now on the halo world map and should be kept in mind for re-runs of the show.
