Re: 44 parhelia observations at Taivaanvahti
Hi Timo,
thanks for showing us this awesome halos. Some of them must have been really bright.
I like the first observation from Nicolas. It is the first time you can see 2 seperated halos at the position around the 45° spot. This should be the 44° parhelia and the Supra/Infralateral arc or 46° halo.
Kind regards,
Andreas

Re: 44 parhelia observations at Taivaanvahti
Hi Timo and Andreas,
I agree, these are some really marvellous observations. The synchronicity of 44/46-deg halos is highly significant, of course.
Schulthess arcs have eluded me so far. Seems that they are reflected parts of the 22-deg-halo.
Hopefully, crystals will be documented too.
Congratulations to the Franco-Finnish expedition!

Re: 44 parhelia observations at Taivaanvahti
I update the list with recent 44 parhelia observation (from Marko Pekkola & Emma Herranen). Also other rare halos included...

Re: 44 parhelia observations at Taivaanvahti
Thanks, Timo,
for keeping us informed. The discussion on Kotivuoris (third) image does not completely convince me, and the seventh one currently posted has no such brightening.
First of all, his lens does not seem to register on an even angular scale, then, I wonder about the fan of light under the parhelic circle, which is characteristic of an infralateral arc. Maybe an enhanced version of the photo might separate it from a 44-deg parhelion.

Yess,
this is it, reminding of the seminal appearance from Minnesota, cf.
https://www.atoptics.co.uk/halo/44pars.htm
and these are the very conditions, when to expect seeing them.
