GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Our old 'backsided' friend, AR0786, re-named as AR0792,
produced several flares of note today. We think this may be a record of some kind for a given active region to have produced major flares and halo CMEs for more than one solar rotation. It produced an C9.4/1N flare at 0523 UT (x-ray max) at N11E53. This was followed, almost immediately, by an LDE flare (X1.3/2B) at 0626 UT (metric Type II burst observed by San Vito) at N12E60 with an estimated coronal shock speed of 1801 km/sec. later, this AR0972 produced a C8.9/SF flare at N12E58. The flare that we will be concerned with was the X1.3/2B flare (long duration event) that was observed by GOES-12/SXI at 0621-0645-0659 UT and, in H-
alpha, by Learmonth at 0608-0625-0940 UT. The San Vito radio Type II was measured at 0626 UT (180 MHz) to 0647 UT (25 MHz); a Type IV was also recorded at San Vito at 0634 to 0734 UT. Chris Balch, NOAA/SEC Chief Forecaster, measured a preliminary leading edge speed of a full halo CME in SOHO/LASCO's C# (C2 imagery was too fast), Vcme = 1744 km/sec. This speed, compared with the estimated Type II speed, suggests some deceleration. We will use Vs = 1801 km/sec to represent the shock speed above the flare site with an assumed piston-driving time, tau = 3 hr. ACE/SWEPAM is measuring a background solar wind speed at this writing, Vsw = 480 km/sec. ACE/EPAM/SIS energetic proton flux levels are still elevated but decreasing at this time.
