Fireballs with sonic booms - audio samples?

Beitrag von Timo Kuhmonen » 6. Jul 2021, 20:25

Hello,

does someone know here, is there a link list available for fireballs, that have been known to generate clear audible sounds, like distant rumble (similar to thunderstorm) or more loud and sharp sonic booms ?

I mean a some kind of list from cases, that include also a recorded sound samples at various distances. I know at least one well known case is Cheljabinsk fireball. It created a loud sonic boom and pressure waves also broke building windows. At the end 2020 one case is from southern Sweden, where meteorites were found.

I ask due to reason, that I am currently doing preliminary testings, what would permanent audio recording system need. I am targetting someday for continuous 24/7 recording. I have been told estimates of 100...150km radius could be covered on one listening station (if less man made noises present on site).

I would be also interested to extract audio spectrum on these sonic booms, to identify those better from natural sounds, like distant thunderstorm sounds. I could see one database (IMO fireball reports) has option to display observations with sound. The amount observations to go though from various countries & years, would take propably too much time...

Hi Timo,

there is an interesting sound sample from the Swedish Uppsala Iron meteorite that fell 7.11.2020:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwY1Wib5d5U

Sound starts at 0:34s into the video about 25 seconds after the flash. I think it is heavily compressed and a bit distorted as the camera mic is subpar.

Other than that you are probably down to youtube booms of meteorite events.

Gruß Mario.

thanks for comments... That sound sample in Sweden, contains more info than "typical" sound samples :-) I will need to google searching for other samples also (including last night bright fireball near to Oslo & Norway...)
