Ultrasonic soundscape under nightsky

Beitrag von Timo Kuhmonen » 10. Sep 2020, 14:47

just wondering, has anyone observed this ? I have not visited yet in Germany, I assume you still have more distant areas, that have less human created noises ?

here is two samples of flying mammals sounds :-)

Those higher frequency pulses are from the ultrasonic radar. Audio 0011 file -> I have been told it is northern bat (Eptesicus nilssonii) slightly above 30kHz. Based on wikipedia map, it is living on areas of Germany also...

It would interesting to observe these more. And maybe to try take photos of them, under a clear night sky using flash on camera. This is not easiest area on photography :-) Maybe next summer then...

Hi Timo! :)

That's interesting! I have never recorded their audio but I can actually hear them sometimes with my own ears. :) Not the 30kHz-ish frequencies of course (well, who knows. :D) but I assume they also make lower pitch noises at times.
When I recorded some perseid meteors earlier in August I caught quite a lot of large bats (I assume some Nyctalus noctula) over a field hunting insects and I was really amazed by seeing this, you would have barely seen them with the naked eye, because they're so fast and human night vision is really not the best in terms of both spacial and temporal resolution. :D
Enjoy watching!

thanks for comments. What I have been there is also "social sounds" that bats use, some of them might be under 20kHz ?

I remember once entering a barn, to pick up firewood. It happaned approx one month / two months ago. I had mosquitos flying around me. I went indise of barn. Did start to hear occasional "brrr, brrr" sounds near to me. When lit a light, I saw that one bat was repeated flying near me. I assume it was sounds from bat wings. I followed it for approx 15minutes. When it was flying towards me, I raise my hand - and the bat made a quick turn. I quess you can do normal activities all around inside. Still they are not hitting you, when flying in the dark (due to ultrasonic radar).

It is expected a bit warmer now here, for this weekend. Maybe bats still fly, need to check it....Normally it is soon time of their hibernation...

I also checked, and in Audacity you can "transfer" the sounds of bats to frequency range - where it can be heard by human ears. It was a bit similar sound, what is usually heard in bat detector...

FYI. on beginning of this week, there was couple of days with lot warmer conditions at Finland. Some places more than +25C temperatures. I also made some tests with my Zoom H5 recorder, for capturing environment sounds. That is because I get basic info of a recording, in case I later put on a permanent recorder system for fireball generated sounds (sonic booms).

I saw at one record, there has been sounds of bat recorded. Must be hungry after a long time hibernation :-) Cannot be exactly sure what species were, most propably from the Vespertilionidae -family.

fyi. currently on my location at central Finland, there is outside two small voice recorders (AudioMoth). One person comes out and checks those, after two weeks of recording start. It remains to be seen, how many bats are detected (also indication of species :-)

fyi,

last summer there was two bats captured and marked with a ring. Myotis mystacinus and Myotis brandtii. Most propably there will not be any similar capturing activity this year anymore.

Couple of days ago, I captured one sample photo of flying bat, together with a view to Cygnus constellation. Nice to follow the acyivity after sunset :-) https://www.taivaanvahti.fi/observations/show/108839
