MAJOR SOLAR FLARE ALERT
ISSUED: 22:10 UTC, 15 JULY 2002
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
A major class X3.0/3B solar flare was observed from Region 10030 at
20:08 UTC (4:08 pm EDT) on 15 July. This is a suspected proton producing
solar flare. The event was associated with strong radio emissions across the
spectrum and included a double-peak x-ray signature with an impulsive X-class
x-ray onset. Complex motions were observed in h-alpha during and following
the event. A full halo coronal mass ejection has also been confirmed through
preliminary SOHO LASCO data. No indication is yet available as to the
inferred velocity of the CME. Additional data is required.
Proton densities at greater than 10 MeV are expected to begin increasing
in the near-Earth space environment over the next 6 to 12 hours. An estimated
impact time for this CME at the Earth will be made available at:
http://www.spacew.com/cme as soon as sufficient data is available to produce
a prediction.
Additional major solar flares may be observed from this spot complex
over the next week.
