INTENSE AURORA IN-PROGRESS

Very quick notice to everyone that TONIGHT should be a relatively good
night for middle latitude observers to see auroral activity. Europe is being
blessed with an impressive display. The disturbance is rapidly weakening and
probably won't be quite as impressive over North America as it was last
night, but should still be widely visible. Last night's display was visible
into Arizona. Unfortunately, much of the east was under a heavy cloud deck.

For those who were clouded out - you'll get a second chance. Region 486
just a few hours ago produced another major class X10 solar flare at 20:49
UTC (1:49 pm EST) on 29 October. It has been confirmed to be associated with
another strongly Earthward-directed coronal mass ejection (a beautiful
full-halo event). It has also thrown out another batch of energetic protons,
which will make a mess of the SOHO spacecraft cameras, spacecraft star
trackers and loads of other electronic gadgets floating in space.

We don't yet know when this next disturbance will impact. It's still far
too early. Perhaps tommorrow night. Another AstroAlert will be posted to
advise the public when more is known.

SOHO Scientists sagen 1948km/s

Subject: (STD-Forum) Estimated velocity of the most recent CME

SOHO scientists are estimating the plane of sky velocity of this latest
X10-flare-associated coronal mass ejection at 1,948 kilometers per second.
That's just a tad under the velocity of the X17 event. We will have an
impact assessment published on this list after enough data arrives to start
working the models.

Re: Geschwindigkeit des X17

Hi Peter,

Ciao
Bernhard
