april 2002 aurora

Hi all

I'm slowly recovering from the great Terschelling Oerol show we had for ten days in June, with the premiere of a nice 7 minutes long film of the auroral footage that I shot during solar cycle 23.
And at the moment I am again on Terschelling to install a permanent exhibition of photographs that I took the last few years here.
It's nice to be able to show it to other people, that's the reason I took the pics, and also, I've seen the pics so often now, so it's good to "get them out of my system"; time to make new pics....

But as to april 2002: I found negatives here that I shot in April 2002 when we all watched the sky for a week. I remember that during several days geomagnetic disturbances stopped every time when astronomical twilight started. But I positivily recorded aurora one of those nights, probably the last night of the disturbamces.
Does anyone remember those nights ? I also vaguely remember a Swedish report from that time (Matts ?)

Oh well, I just had a great walk on the beach with a couple of large dogs under a starfilled sky, so nice to be here ...

You are right, there was aurora in april 2002. The site is in german, but each year is listed with all known auroras in Germany, Ch and A, so april 2002 is easy to find.

wow, great archive

I also should have a closer look at A values (K values) because I remember there were at least two nights with sightings. and many Forum members were in the field that week, as I remember.
I'm glad that I now know what week I took the pic, I will post it soon, it's a nice one.

In der Liste von 2002 fehlen zumindest noch zwei Polarlichter.
Einmal das PL am Morgen des 04.10.02, fotografiert von Heino Bardenhagen. Und dann noch ein (sehr) schwaches Foto-PL am Abend des 24.10.02, festgehalten von Torsten Lohf.

danke für den Hinweis auf die fehlenden Ereignisse. Hast Du zufällig Links zu den entsprechenden Bildern paarat? Dann möchte ich das gern nachtragen. Ich möchte ja auch, dass die Galerie möglichst vollständig ist.

Hi Thomas,

das Bild von Heino Bardenhagen wurde irgendwann mal von Claudia hier im Forum nachgereicht. Ich glaube es war Anfang 2003. Leider ist die Archivstruktur des alten Forums hinüber, so dass man nicht so ohne weiteres nach dem Posting suchen kann.

Vielleicht hat ja noch jemand einen Hinweis auf das Bild von Heino

durch googeln findet man eine PL-Galerie von ihm aus dem Jahr 2002.
Das dritte Bild in der Galerie stammt vom 7.10.2002, leider nix vom 4.

Danke für die Recherche, ich war noch nicht dazu gekommen. Damit lässt sich nun die Lücke schließen in der Galerie. Ich muss sowieso irgendwann mal alles gründlich überarbeiten, die Links überprüfen etc.

Ik heb de rare gewoonte om alle data in mijn agenda te noteren, zoals welke flares wanneer, de K-waardes, intensiteit van de storm, etc.
Vooral in de derde week van april was het raak.
Heb je daar wat aan of bedoel je dat niet?

Ik wil ( als je interesse hebt ) wel even een samenvattinkje neer pennen, hier of privé.

Ik hoor het wel...

I remember that I spent four or five nights waiting for aurora in April 2002, it was quite frustrating, with those short nights then.

Hi Jan,

The evening of 17th of April was between 2 somwhat large geomagnetic storms. That evening there was red corona in the very bright twilight of southern Finland, but the storm died down completely as the night grew dark. As soon as the night faded and the day took over, the disturbance regained it strenght and yet another geomagnetic storm was born. Yes, that was very frustrating time...

April 19th or so, there was another geomagnetic storm, but it never got zenithal in southern finland and brightest auroras that night did not occur when the activity on the magnetograms was at it's peak...The activity happened when nothing in the mags was happening and the activity was non-existant when the magnetograms were talking.

Here the data:

Woensdag 17 april was er een G2 storm, K9.
Vrijdag 19 april wees de Kiruna MM - 1000 aan, K7 en de auroral input was 355.
Zaterdag 20 april nog een keer K6.

Je kunt veel data opzoeken/ verifieren op www.spaceweather.com.
De zoekfunctie staat rechtsboven op hun site.
