A very small step forward since last post: After getting hold of a Pinnacle Dazzle DVC 100 and finding a patched version of the v4l library, I have the frame grabber running fine on Fedora Core 6 and Ubuntu 7.1 Linux installations. A borrowed video camera showed disappointing performance - the faint...

I am confused about the quite large crater compared to the fairly small mass and slow entry speed quoted above. From a simple numerical simulation with a lot of crude approximations, I find that the terminal velocity should be around 100m/s. This is the free-fall velocity of a spherical object with ...

Thanks for your quick and detailed recommendation, Mark. I am eager to get away from webcams, and will try to get the USB capture box and use it with a video camera currently collecting dust. I suppose that your B/W video camera performs better in the dark than a typical webcam, although you say it ...

Seeking advice for building fireball station.
Dear fireball hunters, I am member of a small group that will try to set up a network of meteor cameras in Denmark. The cameras are intended to be distributed to high-schools, where they will serve as educational tools as well as provide data on fireballs. So far, funding for a prototype station see...

With the help of Mark's Vechta image and visual observations, we are trying to narrow in a potential fall-out area. Note the map above has been updated with more observations. A re-examination of the Vechta image has lead to the following directions: Start: Az=39.4 deg Alt=21.1 deg End: Az=40.2 deg ...

Lovely picture, Mark! I have estimated the approximate directions from your photo: Start Alt 22 deg, Az 40 deg End Alt 6 deg, Az 39 deg The map above has been updated with this, along with Björns information and more Danish observations. My camera did not register anything, which means that the fire...

Thanks for the analysis, Hartvig! The last couple of nights I have tried to make something similar manually, or at least put some limits on the quantities. The UFO-orbit analysis looks very reasonable. My site position is: Lat 55.698° Long 12.563° BTW, I think there is a typing error in the latitude...

I have added the data from the Vechta observation in the figure above. It really looks like we have two photos of the fireball. The geographic location used for the Vechta camera is for Vechta town centre: Long: 8.289 E (8d17m20s) Lat: +52.731 (52d43m52s) How to interpret the Vechta timestamp of 06:...

Thanks for the picture, Mark - could you try to derive some alt/az values from it? Observations started coming in from our web-form during the morning of sep 21, and this made me check the webcam image archive, which produced the image below: http://www.astro.ku.dk/~norup/webcam/trig_log/snap2006-09...

Hi, The Danish fireball network has recieved visual reports on three fireballs during September 21. Two of these, at 19:30 and 22:05 are coinciding with the reports in this thread - the third I will describe in a separate post. Maps of the azimuth of the observations are shown, and are in the tables...
