magnetometers

Since the Norwegian Magnetometer page refreshes, I added the graph that shows good what must have hapended above the fog/cloud cover above us that was perhaps only a hundred meters thick ... :-( The pic above in the previous posting was taken at 20 UT , we're at the latitude of SOR, TRO and AND (sma...

unexpected storms

Hi all As you might have noticed we had quite some aurora Monday night and Sunday night, here in Porjus, Lapland, Sweden (69N 20E). I posted some pics at http://www.timelapse.nl/s1page.php?p=pag&pg_id=52 First pic is Monday evening, Moon still under the horizon and pic 2,3,4 are Sunday night wit...

Hi All The time-lapse camera is installed, not on the frozen lake though, the fresh snow is too high. It is on top of a bulldozered heap of snow that is about eight meters high. We have high clouds here in Porjus, Lapland, Sweden (69N 20E), but there is a nice halo around the moon. some stars are vi...

+ total mooneclips and aurora

Hi Dirk Nice thing, I was attentioned on this aurora cam by a post from Ulrich about a week ago. Here in Porjus, Lapland Sweden we also have Japanes aurora cams, basically a private initiative with a bit of external funding, done by a very enthousiastic Japanese aurora lover. The guy has set up a re...

Hi Ulrich, Daniel and Lutz ! Thanks for the fast diagnosis, I was just wondering if an Earth directed CME was possible. So I'll wait until the coronal hole becomes effective, has anyone an idea when that might be ? I'm planning on going into the mountains when it arrives, just to have absolutely no ...

10943 beta gamma

Hi All According to www.dxlc.com sunspot 10943 has a beta gamma structure. That's quite interesting since it is at the center of he solar disk. We're at Porjus, Swedish Lapland now (me, Yann Hollander & Cindy) and we have very clear skies at the moment. A bit cold though, two nights ago it was m...

partly solved

I've probably found what's wrong The green noise seems to be fluctuating readout (bias) noise, a design mistake that supposedly is fixed in the newer D2Hs. But, since Nikon uses a black level of zero (black clipping) in their 12 bit raw file, the output level of the entire image fluctuates in harmon...

question on ireggular noise problem D2H

Hi all ! My Nikon D2H turned up an irregular noise problem that shows at high ISO. I've posted some frames plus a quicktime filmclip of 75 frames at http://www.timelapse.nl/s1page.php?p=pag&pg_id=51 Perhaps you can have a look and advise me of what might be the origin. My guess is that it's some...

lightning filmclip

Hi All ! I just returned from two months filming and photographing in the French Alp mountains, a lot at 3 km height (lovely Gegenschein by the way). In the coming weeks I'll be slowly showing new footage and pics from the past summer, including Terschelling NLC's, but first here is an appetizer: cl...

NLC 15/16 07 2006

Hi All !
I just (23:35 MEZT) observed a few NLC's from Terschelling (53.3N 5.3E) at height 20 degrees and Azimut 340.
Not spectacular though, but it is too early yet to see NLC's near the horizon, the sky is still too bright there.

distance NLC's mathematical puzzle

Hi all Last night was spectacular, and I very much enjoy all the nice pics that I've seen in the forum. I have a question that at first sight seems easy, but is a little more complex if you dive into it. Q: what is the distance of NLC's per degree over the horizon if you assume that they form at an ...

no nlc's

I do constant watching of the night sky at the moment from Terschelling (53.3N 5.3E) and I didn't see nlc's sunday night and monday night, except for some far away nlc's lower than 2 degrees above the horizon.
A pity, because both nights were extremely clear, perhaps to-night ?

nice show from Terschelling

Hi all ! I arrived last night on the island of Terschelling (53.3N 5.3E) for a small NLC campaign. Yesterdays display was very nice and since my camera gear was still unpacked, I took a good visual all sky look. The NLC's very visible all night and the best display was at the end of the night. Remar...

NLC's and 5 day cycle

Hi all I've found two interesting pdf publications by the Swedish IRF institute (Kiruna) on the occurrence of NLC's. Most interesting is the existence of a five day cycle in occurrence of NLC's. What also interests me is that the relationship with solar cycle activity is probably smaller than expect...

also NLC sighting Neth.

Hi Rainer !

I've seen them also, same night, between 21:30 and 22 UT (23:30 and 24 MEZT) from 30 km north of Amsterdam, Neth.
My N. horizon got clouded when I put my tripod outside. I didn't see structure, but the silverish color which didn't move was unmistaken.

greetings, JanL

Hi All

If I'm correct this is the 11111th message in the forum :-)

But I expect some activity to-night if Bz goes down, since it is beginning of April. We should get clear skies in the Netherlands, and the moon, well, it will be a nicely lighting up the landscape.

Hi ! (Saturday 18 March 23H local) It looks like high auroral activity is going on now. speed > 500 km/s density > 10 protons/cm3 Bt 11 nT, Bz -5 nT magnetic disturbances > -500 nT over southern stations in Norway ... At least photographic aurora should be recordable from northern Netherlands and no...
