By the way - The lightning strike that it 'appears' to be connected to occurred some time before the BL appeared. The BL seemed to just appear out of the darkness. Perhaps the lightning strike did have something to do with the creation of the ball moments later (in seconds or even minutes). Or perha...

Karl and Rainer, Yes I did crop the image a bit. The full width image area is shown in the image below. I tried measuring the length of the BL streak again on the transparency using a Lupe magnifier and a small metal ruler however some sort of 'microscopic' ruler would be needed to be more accurate....

Karl-Gerd, I do not speak German and Babel Fish translation does not give me a very good interpretation but I think I understand the text just well enough. I assure everyone that the photo is genuine and not manipulated or faked. As well as observing it myself during the long time exposure I later f...

Now I've been informed (by a reliable authority) that there ARE elliptical halos produced by pyramidal crystals with strange face angles but the halos are broad and indistinct - so it said. Amazing ! But because the one that appears in my photo is fairly sharply defined - and not broad - it is more ...

Yes Benjamin. After discussion about it, it now appears likely to be just a lens artefact (an internal lens reflection). The oddly shaped ellipticity of the inner ring just doesn't make sense in terms of it being a halo ring. It's interesting too that the color bands are reversed to that of the 22 d...

Michael, Yes, I'm not sure if it is either. This is why I'm trying to have it verified as a 9 degree halo or otherwise. The ring does look an odd elipticle shape. I put it down to being off centre in the frame but I can't seem to replicate this (at least looking through the viewfinder) when focusing...

Thanks Helga. I'm still searching for any other known photos of a '9 degree Lunar (Moon) Halo'. Does anyone know of any ? You may notice in the photos there is a fair ammount of 'elipticle distortion' of the halo rings. I presume this is a lens distortion because the moon is so far off centre in the...

9 deg and 22 deg Lunar Halos.
I photographed these Lunar Halos on 5th April, Melbourne, Australia. I've been looking on the Net for other 9deg and 22deg Lunar Halo pics but cannot seem to find any. Can anyone point me to other pics like this ? I have seen rare 9deg and 22deg Solar Halo pics before but not a LUNAR one. How rare i...

9 & 22 deg Lunar Halos, Melb. Australia.
Taken 5th April, 2004. Melbourne, Australia. I believe the inner ring is a rare 9 degree LUNAR Halo. Comments please. This is the first time I've captured what I think is a 9 deg halo. I believe 9 deg Solar Halos are very rare (I haven't got one so far) and in searching on the Net I have not so far ...

Thanks Andre'. Can't have everything I suppose. Where I live it's very hard to get aurora australis photos as it rarely happens at this latitude. Thanks Michael. The Fuji Velvia transparencies show the colors to be even more 'electric' than what I can achieve in scanning and here with monitors that have a lower gamma range. And even the trannies can't capture the full range of brightness/intensity as in real life. You'll notice in the first f...
