Re: Wolkenstreifen während bzw. nach Sonnenuntergang - was ist das?

October 3 2017: The noctilucent-like clouds were visible to the east at dawn, didn't get as much of an opportunity to see any purple light due to stratocumulus but there was an electric blue tint to the sky above the horizon, up to 5-10 degrees. The clouds themselves, in wispy bands, were visible up...

Re: Wolkenstreifen während bzw. nach Sonnenuntergang - was ist das?

October 2 2017: Stratocumulus has become more broken and the banded clouds, similar to what has been described above, have returned in the evening sky here in Stoke-on-Trent, England. Infrared satellite imagery shows no or very little cirrus in that direction. They extended to around 30-40 degrees a...

Re: Wolkenstreifen während bzw. nach Sonnenuntergang - was ist das?

Just a brief comment. These have been observed from my location in Stoke-on-Trent, England too. They showed a very similar appearance to the above photos, horizontal banding, becoming coloured for a short time after sunset then disappearing. On 9 September there was a brief, vivid and fiery orange/r...

A couple of my images, is this the yellow band (light) that you speak of? (Image 2, Halo)

Re: Atmosphärisches August 2017

Here's a report from Stoke-on-Trent, England (Claudia already has a copy plus images) Quite an intriguing cloud formation appeared last night (23rd August 2017). It resembled cirrus and had wave-like structures embedded in it. I could see it in the distance as a bluish haze, even with the lower clou...

Not sure whether I'm doing the right by placing this here but it is PSC related:

Re: Perlmutterwolken über Mitteleuropa am 28.1.17?

Skies were clear at dawn on the 29th January, perhaps a last chance to seek PSCs ahead of more inclement weather while temperatures over the area remain around -80 C at 30 hPa as per upper charts. Again, there was some very faint white streaks, and there did seem a diffuse blue-white area above wher...

Re: Perlmutterwolken über Mitteleuropa am 28.1.17?

A report from Stoke, England. Skies progressively cleared during the evening of the 28th after an afternoon of showers (and a nice rainbow), an opportunity to have a look for PSCs as temperatures above the area at 30 hPa are around -80 C, at least according to the analyis of upper air charts. Nothin...

Re: Perlmutterwolken über Mitteleuropa am 28.1.17?

It was clear here at dawn (27th January) in Stoke, England but there was nothing to indicate PSCs, no purple light. The sky is more milky in appearance but I'm not willing to put that down to anything. Will keep an eye out through the day, particularly around the sun, for any detail or any structure...

Re: Perlmutterwolken über Mitteleuropa am 28.1.17?

Europe is/has been under a more blocked synoptic pattern compared to last year when storms were battering the UK so it could be that will also have an effect on whether we see type II was what I meant to say. I'm not really expecting these this time. Below is the link to the report (with images) of ...

Re: Perlmutterwolken über Mitteleuropa am 28.1.17?

Hallo zusammen, hier in Bonn gerade sehr deutliches Purpurlicht.

1710 - 1730 UT - 5/8 cloud cover, diffuse whitish veil-like cloud west to southwest, highest altitude to west (roughly 10 degrees), looks likely to be type I. Cirrus silhouetted against it. However, the band remained at roughly the 10 degree mark at its highest point to west and remained fairly subd...

Re: PSC über England (010216)

There continued to be nacreous clouds through the afternoon with colours in and around the sun, mainly purple but cloud was a problem. Had to wait until it gradually cleared at sunset. There were nacreous clouds to the east, even with faint spectral bands but there doesn't appear to be any evident t...

Re: PSC über England (010216)

Thanks Claudia, A lot of issues of high cloud this morning so difficult to prove whether they were there at dawn. However, PSC Type II have been sighted to the NNE (not iridescent) and a slightly iridescent lenticular patch to the south about 25-30 degrees up. 0815-0845 UT. Seem to be less extensive...

Fireball - 0613 UT 12th March 2014

Comments I made to someone else on a fireball that I observed early on 12th March 2014 from Stoke-on-Trent, England: "Early on 12th March (0613 UT) I observed a fireball. It was practically a daytime meteor as the sun was due to rise in 15 minutes. It occurred to the west, at least from my vant...

Re: Halo Phenomena in Contrails

Alec, (Really shouldn't write when I'm half asleep but anyway) Difficult to say. The upper tangent arc and parry arc that we witnessed last year (and your photos of the parry arc are on this forum somewhere) was due to extensive contrail cirrus. On 10 August an old contrail became a feather plume fa...

Impressive noctilucent display beginning 0115 UTC and ending 0300 UTC 3 June. It was of brightness 3, perhaps 4 in places (in a strand) but I had to wait a little while for the clouds to brighten up. As mentioned above there were herring bone patterns but these appeared later in the display. You nee...

Possible Bishop's Ring? from Saharan dust 5-8 March 2013

Are dust particles from the Sahara small enough to cause this phenomena? An airmass with a swathe of saharan dust is expected to cross a large part of Europe from northwest Africa, with the greatest concentration for the UK and Germany appearing to be greatest on Wednesday 6th March. Some rain is ex...

Hello Alec, Well done on your first Parry. They can be quite elusive but the one on the 9th was fairly long-lived and appeared twice. This Parry was the third for me this year (so far). I can't remember when I saw my first one because I've observed them without understanding what they were. Best wis...
